What is a Chimney Chase?

Chimney Chase

A chimney chase is an important part of a chimney system, usually found in homes that have a pre-built fireplace. They are usually built with wood, vinyl or metal with a chimney chase cover, to prevent debris and water going through which could cause damage. The main function of a chimney chase is to provide support and protection of the flue. This is essential because the flue ensures that gasses from the fireplace are going through efficiently and safely.

Primary Functions

The chimney chase is primarily there to protect the chimney. When the chimney chase is closed, it prevents leaves, snow, rain, and animals into the chimney which could cause blockages, water damage, or nests. Another function of a chimney chase is for insulation in the flue. This assists with combustion, proper draft, and reduction of downdrafts. This makes sure that the fireplace does not have build up or chimney fires.

Common Issues and Fixes

1) Water Damage

Water Damage can happen when the chase is not sealed properly. Water can then trickle in which can cause dry rot or rust to metal chimney chases.

How to fix this?

Inspect the area to see if there are cracks or gaps. Once the issue has been identified, decide if it is a minor fix with high-quality exterior caulk or if it would need replacement.

2) Rust

Chase covers or metal chimney chases can eventually rust due to poor weather conditions, and in areas that receive a lot of rainfall.

How to fix this?

To take care of the rusted areas, sand down the affected areas and apply a rust-inhibiting primer along with a coat of weather-resistant paint. Sometimes the rust can be too difficult to fix and the entire chase would need to be replaced.

3) Pests

Structural deterioration can occur with pests that eat at the wood. Insects like termites can cause the structure to lose its stability, causing risk of breakage.

How to fix this?

Inspect the chimney chase for possible signs of pest infestation. If found, replace and treat the areas and apply protective sealant if necessary.

The chimney system is reliant on the chimney chase for insulation and protection. Having a chimney chase regularly maintained and inspected, assists with catching damage early on, which can avoid costly fixes in the long run. Homeowners should be aware of the common issues like water damage, rust, and pests that can cause damage to the chase in order to keep overall structural integrity and functionality of the chimney.
